Huffington Post article on Stephen Harper's Tough on Crime agenda

October 18, 2011: Excerpt from article in the Huffington Post

Representative Jerry Madden, a conservative Republican who heads the Texas House Committee on Corrections is quoted in today’s Huffington Post:

“It’s a very expensive thing to build new prisons and, if you build ’em, I guarantee you they will come. They’ll be filled, OK? Because people will send them there.

But, if you don’t build ’em, they will come up with very creative things to do that keep the community safe and yet still do the incarceration necessary.”

According to the Texan experience, tough on crime measures are more tough on taxpayers and produce no benefits.

For those promoting the prison in the Okanagan as a means of job creation and economic stimulus, some creative thinking in that department would also be a refreshing change.
