Excerpt from Penticton town meeting with provincial government representatives

“I haven’t seen a whole lot of murderers that have gone to court and then just walk out, I don’t see that… but I’m sure it happens… I guess.” Brent Merchant quoted in Penticton town meeting video. (Merchant is the Assistant Deputy Minister BC Corrections, Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Corrections Branch)

Q. The remand prisoners, (accused of any crime) go to trial and they might get convicted or they might get released. So if they get released, do they get released from the courthouse?

A. They’re released at the courthouse and are given a pass to make their own way back to the prison to get their belongings.
