A Prison in Summerland, BC? No: Oliver.

Correctional facility approved for Oliver, BC

Why is a prison a bad idea?

with 2 comments

1. A prison is an effort of last resort.

2. Research indicates prison towns experienced less growth than non-prison towns except that in prison towns they had a greater increase in unemployment, poverty… Reference

3. Summerland is an excessively small town in comparison with other prison towns, (for factual support of this theory see post above called The Facts) therefore it will be evident that our main industry is prison-based and is unlikely to escape the stigma. Summerland becomes known as a prison town – as in Kingston (Penitentiary), Matsqui (Prison) etc.

4. ‘Locally Unwanted Land Use’ or LULU is an acronym created by Urban Planners; a land use that is useful to society, but objectionable to its neighbors. LULUs include: (1) interstate highways, (2) large dams, (3) medium and maximum security prisons, (4) commercial nuclear power plants, and (5) gambling casinos.

5. The presence of a prison can affect real estate value even if only due to perception.

6. A development of this size puts a massive strain on the town infrastructure. Existing water shortage worsens.

7. A prison does not fit the ‘brand’ of Summerland.

8. Potentially productive, job-creating new businesses and families look elsewhere.

9. Prison towns attract non-productive family members of inmates – social housing becomes part of landscape.

  1. You are wrong on every point you have. If you did a little research you would know that. what I have learned regarding this proposal is that the no side doen’t care about the facts or reason or logic. This is about emotion. People have strong ideas about what a prision is and the type of people who are in it. This comes down to an us vs them mentality. news flash… sometimes good people make bad decisions, sometimes people get dealt really bad hands in life and the system is not fair. This is about the haves and the have nots. The south Okanagan is the poorest part of BC. That’s a fact. we need more high paying jobs rather than seasonal, low paying ones. We need to care not only about ourselves, but also about our communities. Is it healthy? do we have a strong middle class? do we have empathy for the less fortunate? Most importantly, do we show our children that we are good citizens and care about others, or do we show them that we our bigots and are unable to look at the facts before making up our minds on issues we know nothing about. SPIT IT OUT! I love how the pro-prison people pretend to know something no one else knows? If only we were as intelligent as they were then maybe we could understand.

I have posted at least 10 tragedies in the prison system from the last year alone and have not seen one article posted about a benefit to a community???. Put up or shut up Ginger.

Oh and by the way, sex crimes against children is not being dealt a bad hand, you are a sick individual and should seek help.
